Top 17 for 7-14-2013

1) PPL Montana dedicated the $245 million Rainbow Dam upgrade. The 60 MW project generates enough power for 45,000 homes.

2) Northwestern Energy and Compass Wind dedicated the $86 million Spion Kop wind farm. The 40 MW project is operating at a 48% capacity factor, significantly above average for wind farms across North America.
3) The EPA issued the draft barley lifecycle greenhouse gas analysis for the Montana Advanced Biofuels project. The analysis verifies that the proposed Great Falls vital wheat gluten, animal feed and ethanol plant will produce Advanced Biofuel which sells at a price premium over corn ethanol. Thank you to Senator Baucus and Senator Tester for prodding EPA to get its analysis done!
4) Bullhook Community Health Center broke ground on its new facility in Havre. We're very proud to be part of the team that made this project possible. Project partners include the Norsman Group, Bear Paw Development, CTA Engineers, Guy Tabacco Construction, US Bank, Church, Harris, Johnson, and Williams, P.C. and the Montana Community Development Corporation.
5) We closed a $1,218,000 SBA 504 loan as part of the permanent financing for TD&H Engineering's new building in Great Falls.
6) We started our exhibit at the International Food Technologist's Expo in Chicago, joining over 20,000 food industry professionals from around the globe. Did you know that even with our world class agricultural processing plants in the Great Falls region, we still ship the majority of our ag products out of state without any value added?
7) The Entrepreneur Elite met for their monthly Roundtable discussing pressing issues and receiving peer experience to aid in making growth decisions. If you would like to join this group of growth-focused business leaders, contact Rebecca Engum at or 781-6832.
8) Held a GrowthWheel session with a member of the Entrepreneur Elite to review their 360 Growth Plan and refine strategies. Met with an established Great Falls business to discuss SBA 504 financing for their expansion project. Worked on financing structures for another proposed business expansion.
9) In FY 2013, our Business Strategy team (including our Small Business Development Center and Procurement Technical Assistance Center) worked with 177 businesses across the Great Falls trade area, resulting in capital investment of $5,400,674 and 6 new companies. Five businesses joined our Growth Initiative's Entrepreneur Elite. We provided 8 training events attended by 106 entrepreneurs. 140 business leaders participated in The Fire Within women-owned business event, a 35% increase over 2012.
10) Attended an EPA Brownfields workshop in preparartion for seeking EPA funds this fall to create a Cascade County-wide brownfield assessment grant program to complement our existing EPA Brownfield Loan Fund. 12) GTF's passenger numbers for FY 2013 were up almost 4,000 from the record numbers in FY 2012.
13) GFDA will moderate Making Wind Work: A Forum on Wind Development in Montana being held July 25th, 5:50-7:30 PM at Great Falls College MSU. Everyone interested in future wind development in the region is invited.
14) GFDA is co-sponsoring a special event for businesses interested in learning more about the Affordable Care Act. The event will be hosted by the Montana Business Health Network at Great Falls International Airport on July 30th at 7:30 AM.
15) We were awarded a 7 year renewal of our regional Small Business Development Center by the Montana Department of Commerce.
16) Two of our team members, Tamariel Christopher and Jennifer Rogers, received official notification that they have been certified as Economic Development Finance Professionals (EDFP) by the National Development Council. GFDA now has 4 certified EDFP's.
