GFDA Top 12 11-18-13

1) Hosted the first meeting of the Great Falls Food Manufacturing Group in partnership with the Montana Manufacturing Extension Partnership Center. The Group will be meeting regularly to find solutions to common challenges. If you would like to join, contact Rebecca Engum at 1-406-771-9032 or

2) Networked with agri-processing companies and industry leaders at the Supply Side West tradeshow and met with an agri-processing prospect that has short-listed Great Falls for a new manufacturing operation.
3) Worked with a local primary sector business on expansion plans, helping to determine project parameters and action steps to guide decision-making. Worked with an entrepreneur on a potential new downtown business, sharing resources to help with financial projections and space budgeting. Discussed financing and business planning with a business looking to purchase a building.
4) Worked with a client on the application package for an SBA 504 loan. Worked with several local primary sector businesses investigating expansion opportunities in Great Falls. Assisted a MAFB Contracting Officer with a WAWF (Air Force payment system) client invoice issue.
5) Put together a brief on recent primary sector business growth in Great Falls for several retailers considering coming to our market. These are retailers we've targeted to bring to Great Falls to reduce retail leakage from local and regional shoppers who currently travel to other Montana retail markets for some things.
6) The City Design Review Committee approved plans for a new downtown office building.
7) Participated in the Association of Procurement Technical Assistance Centers (APTAC) training conference in Washington, DC to stay abreast of changes in government contracting so we can better assist local businesses.
8) Did you know that Montana Big Sky Trust Fund grants are available to support existing primary sector business expansions? If 50% or more of your company's revenue comes from out of state and you're going to create net new jobs that pay in excess of 170% of the state minium wage (including benefits), you may qualify. 9) We closed out an SBA earmark grant that Montana's Congressional delegation won for us 3 years ago. This small grant enabled us to step up our operations, leading in our last two fiscal years to a $2.96 million expansion of the loan capital we have to help finance local companies, an incerase in our SBA 504 loan portfolio of 49% in just the last fiscal year, and creation of The Growth Initiative to support fast growing second-stage companies.
10) Put together a draft business plan to double our loan capital over the next five years to keep pace with the needs of businesses, developers and non-profit organizations in the Great Falls trade area.
11) The opportunities in Alberta's oil sands have become well known in Great Falls, but oil and gas drilling is just as active. In October, there were 261 active drilling rigs in Alberta and 391 active service rigs!
12) One World Trade Center in New York City, topped by the spire built by the ADF Group, was named the nation's tallest building, standing 1776 feet!
