GFDA Top 14 4/9/14

Here's the GFDA Top 14 for last week, celebrating great things happening to move Great Falls Forward!

1) We exhibited and networked with energy companies at the Montana Energy Conference and Tradeshow in Billings.
2) Pitched the Great Falls region to site selection consultants at the Area Development Site Selector Energy Forum in Dallas.
3) The Great Falls Job Service set a record for the number of job listings in the Great Falls area with 776 available jobs!
4) Worked with a long-term client to revise cash flow projections for a planned expansion in Great Falls. Discussed the reality of small business ownership with a small business owner and what steps need to be taken by the owner to change direction of the business. Worked on plans for infrastructure financing with a proposed new Great Falls manufacturer.
5) GFDA's Board unanimously voted to support the Great Falls Public Schools levy.
6) The GFDA Board also unanimously voted to adopt a Montana Business Attraction Code of Ethics as part of our efforts to spur statewide cooperative business attraction and increased state business attraction marketing.
7) The Little Shell Chippewa Tribe appointed Shawn Gilbert to GFDA's Board. Welcome Shawn!
8) Answered questions for two entrepreneurs at Start-up Spark! If you are interested in starting a business and the process has made you foggy, attend one of our Start-up Sparks! and lift the fog! The next Spark! will be Monday, April 14th, noon in the Small Business Development Training Center at GFDA, 300 Central Avenue, 4th floor (downtown Great Falls U.S. Bank building). No RSVP's needed. Just show up!
9) The Montana Small Business Development Center Network's Invest in Success conference is next week, April 16-17 in Butte. The conference will provide info on social media, financial management, and the future customer of business. 11) The Montana Manufacturing/Trade Day will be held May 29 in Bozeman. This great event is put together by the Montana Chamber of Commerce, Montana Manufacturing Council and a number of state and federal agencies and organizations. Register at: events.montanachamber.com
12) GFDA has been asked to put together a panel of leading economic developers to discuss what economic development will be like in 2024 and how economic development organizations should prepare for the future at the International Economic Development Council's annual conference in Ft. Worth next fall.
13) Great Falls Public Schools was named as one of the best school districts in the nation for music education by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM). Great Falls was the only community in Montana to be recognized.
14) Area Development published its 28th annual survey of corporate executives and its 10th annual survey of site selection consultants. 53% of corporate executives said their companies plan to open new facilities within 4 years (45% within 2 years). Availability of skilled labor ranked as the most important site selection factor. 95% of executives said the availability of skilled labor is an important or very important factor in deciding where to site a new facility. 80% of executives said ready too build land is an important or very important factor. 76% said expedited or fast-track permitting is an important or very important factor. 73% said ratings of public schools is an important or very important factor. Site selection consultants also ranked the availability of skilled labor as the most important site selection factor amongst their clients. 98% of consultants said the availability of skilled labor is an important or very important factor. 93% said ready to build land is an important or very important factor. 88% said expedited or fast-track permitting is an important or very important factor. 77% said ratings of public schools is an important or very important factor.
