GFDA top 15 for Nov. 16, 2014


Here's the GFDA Top 15 for this week, celebrating great things happening to move Great Falls Forward! It was a busy week with 4 of our team members on the road.
1) Our High Plains Financial Board approved two loans to help area businesses to expand, including a $606,000 SBA 504 loan to finance a new building for a local business in partnership with First Interstate Bank (total investment will be $1,468,000) and a $116,000 loan to help finance new equipment for a business expansion in Glacier County.
2) Connected a local expanding agri-processor with marketing resources for a prospective new domestic market. Began work with a representative of a national chain looking at possibilities in Great Falls.
3) Networked with business leaders and financiers at the Advanced Bioeconomy Leadership Conference, part of our effort to grow the region's value-added agriculture processing and energy industry clusters. The event included leading companies in biofuels, bioplastics and biochemicals. Visited the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's Joint Bioenergy Institute and Advanced Biofuels Process Demonstration Unit.
4) Networked with members of the Montana Farm Bureau Federation at their 95th Annual Convention in Billings.
5) The U.S. Air Force issued a Request for Information to solicit interest from real estate developers to explore reuse of 42 acres of Malmstrom AFB, most likely to create high quality rental housing for Airmen and the community.
6) Partnered with the U.S. Small Business Administration to deliver the two-day Boots to Business entrepreneur workshop at Malmstrom AFB for 21 departing Airmen.
7) Great Falls College MSU has become part of the Montana Space Grant Consortium, a NASA-funded organization that supports STEM education. Two GFC students recently became the first from the College to win Space Grant scholarships. The program supports all STEM disciplines including health sciences, mathematics, physics, engineering, chemistry and biology.
8) The City Design Review Board approved plans for a new 9,000 square foot dialysis center being developed by Liberty Dialysis on 26th Street South.
9) The Montana State Fund announced $20 million in dividends to Montana businesses, in effect a 16% refund for 2012 workers compensation premiums.
10) Attended the fall Association of Procurement Technical Assistance Center conference. Learned new ways to help local companies identify and pursue government contracts, and about procurement rule changes at DOD, SBA and other federal agencies. 11) Our new Small Business Development Center Director, Jason Nitschke, completed the first course towards certification as an Economic Development Finance Professional. If you would like help in securing financing for your business expansion or start-up, contact Jason at or 1-406-750-0314.
12) The North Industrial Area Task Force will meet this Tuesday, November 18th at 9:00 AM in the second floor Boardroom of the downtown US Bank building at 300 Central Avenue. The Task Force is a public/private group we put together years ago to work together on infrastructure improvements to open up the industrial area off Highway 87 surrounding MaltEurop's barley malting plant. 14) This fall, Montana increased its number of high school students taking dual enrollment courses by 96% compared to the spring of 2012. About 65% of this falls' dually enrolled students are receiving both high school and college credit for the college-level courses.
15) Renowned speaker Dr. William Osgood will present a free day-long Growing an Existing Business Workshop in Great Falls this Friday, November 21st from 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM. The workshop will be held at the CM Russell Museum.
